As a web developer and someone that maintains a website, I think it is important to keep your content and designs fresh and updated. You can’t let things get stale. There is a familiarity about your website that readers come to be comfortable with but that isn’t always a good thing. I think people want to be surprised and know that your website is a living and working extension of yourself. I haven’t updated my theme in quite a while so I thought tonight was a good time. I have been playing with some concepts with some other websites and I wanted to see how they worked with mine.
Change Is Good…
In light of spring and the changing of the seasons I’ve put together some minor updates to the theme of my website. Although I wasn’t exactly going for any “look” in particular, I like the metallic feel and the burnt-in oriental flower background in the header. I think it came out really cool. I usually like dark colors as I think it’s a little easier to read off of, but maybe that’s just me.
With that in mind I stuck with a darker gray and light font as apposed to the black that overwhelmed the design before. I changed the colors of headings to stand out more and added an underline to them to separate content throughout my blogs.
These changes took only a few hours and to me that is the beauty of a website that is theme or template based. Making major look and feel changes can be applied site wide extremely easily. I hope this inspires some of you all to refresh your websites and keep things fresh.
Back In School
So after a five week break from school due to “technical difficulties” with my account, I’m back. Today was my first day being back in and it felt good. Everyone likes to feel like they’re being responsible with their future. I’m taking a Sociology class and I’m looking forward to it. Not because of the work but because it makes me feel constructive; I feel like I’m accomplishing something. It’s a self-serving feeling but hey, in the end, I’m better for it and I just may finish that degree.

Hey there, Mr. Yardman… I appreciate the help you’ve given me already. (LT here, btw)
It’s a lot to take in… I’ve got the right mental tools, I’m sure of it… but It’s a lot to take in with no coding in the recent past.
Any great tips for beginners or general tips would be much appreciated. The links you’ve already given me are already very appreciated.
Glad to help LT. I would suggest thinking about what direction you want to go in. If you want to do just web design work then maybe consider taking some Photoshop training, etc. That’s probably the one major tool that I use consistently.
And like I suggested to you before, learn CSS. I’ll say that again, LEARN CSS. With the way websites are made now CSS is the cornerstone of putting together functionality and design. This goes especially with CMS website like WordPress and Joomla.
Now, if you’re wanting to build web applications you absolutely need some formal training. It’s hard to just jump into programming without a common knowledge of the basics which is what they would teach you in school. I know this personally. I went through the motions of doing some application development but there was a huge detachment there for me and I later realized I didn’t want to spend another three years on college to become a programmer. So I stuck to what I know best.
