Ok, I'm not much for gaming and that's weird considering I'm somewhat of a computer geek, nerd, dork or whatever you want to call it. But it seems the newest "thing" taking over the world, or at least my family, is none other than Guitar Hero. When I say, "take over" I mean its consuming people to the point of sending them back to childhood; EVEN my parents.
I've sort of described my parents here before and they are somewhat the exception to the standard, typical, conservative parents. They like to party (a lot) and let loose on occasion. They enjoy alcohol, parties, and sports and are very active in their families and the community. A very contrasting lifestyle but overall they're very good people. Hell, I love them and I'm a great judge of character. But their latest "vice" has become Guitar Hero. It's like the latest fashion or some shit. If you could plug heroine into a PlayStation 2 and shoot up, there would be my dad. Now mind you, they have to play this game so they can beat their friends at the next Guitar Hero get-together. Yes, they get together with friends that are roughly around their age, and play Guitar Hero.
Now imagine my dad. He gets this game from my Grandmother for Christmas and as soon as he can, he wants to get home to play. You can sense the anticipation. The minute he got home from making the family rounds he has to run to his room and pop in his latest toy. And who do you think is right there next to him encouraging him like he's on tour in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, playing in front of more than a hundred thousand fans? My MOM of course. And she doesn't just want to watch, she wants to play next. To hell with being his groupie, she wants the fame and fortune too. Let it be known this is all happening at 11:00 p.m. to probably around 2:00 a.m. last night. In fact, I fell asleep to the sounds of clicking, tapping, oohs by the canned crowd and Pat Benatar's, Hit Me with Your Best Shot.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome. I'm amused by their interest in video games. Now, I doubt I'll be playing much Guitar Hero but I know my parents will be jamming out for nights to come. Don't forget to include days, cause you know what they were doing when I stopped by my mothers for lunch? They were playing Guitar Hero.
What does it all mean?
Well, in my opinion, this only shows that video games have turned a major corner in recent years. The entire industry has been revolutionized because the target audiences have changed and have become quite universal. Games were traditionally targeted to young kids, teens and guys in their early to late twenties. Games have become intriguing to people in all walks of life and it will only grow leaps and bounds as the technologies that render and produce these games get better.
My parents are simple people and enjoy the simple pleasures but to see them both so amused and interested in a video game, I can't help but be impressed and surprised. I also have to ponder "what's next?" What will be the next big craze to consume my mom and dad to the point where they're racing home to flip on the video game console? Whatever it is, I hope it's good and I hope it keeps them entertained.
